(Hattiesburg, MS) After missing the first half of the season due to back surgery, Ben finally returned to the Winner’s Circle Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway. It has taken Ben several weeks to not only feel out how his repaired vertebrae reacts as he straps into his open wheel modified, but to get a feel for his car. “Our competitors have had a big head start in sorting out their race cars and it has taken me a few nights back in the car to feel like I know what the car needs and how to make appropriate adjustments,” Ben commented.

Next Saturday night is the 8th Annual Curtis Burns Memorial race at Hattiesburg Speedway. Ben is the reigning Champion, having captured the title in 2018. Ben’s co-driver, Bowen, drew an excellent starting position for the heat race. Ben started second and went on to win, flag-to-flag and would start on the pole of the Feature. Ben’s old stablemate and racing buddy Kevin Cumbie won his heat race and would start on the outside front row. The stage was set for a flashback from when Ben & Kevin raced head-to-head years ago.

At the drop of the green flag, Ben charged into the lead with Cumbie in second. A caution near the mid-race point reset the field and proved to be unfortunate for Cumbie. Ben once again took command of the race on the restart while Cumbie was tagged, turned into the outside wall, hit several times and received major damage. Ben continued to dominate the 16-car field and took the checkers for his first win in 2019. “Tonight was great preparation for next week’s big event,” Ben commented at his trailer after the race.
